As a family, newborn, and maternity photographer based in Surbiton, Surrey, I recently had the joy of photographing a beautiful outdoor sunset family session in Bushy Park. Sessions like these are exactly why I love natural, outdoor family photography—relaxed, playful, full of connection, and set against the most stunning golden light.
Scouting the Perfect Location for Light, Space, and Play
Before the family arrived, I spent time wandering through Bushy Park, carefully scouting the best areas for the shoot. One of the most important parts of outdoor family photography is understanding how the light changes throughout the day, especially around sunset.
I looked for:
Open, golden-lit spaces where the children could run freely
Quieter corners away from crowds
Beautiful backdrops where we could play games and capture natural interaction
This preparation makes a huge difference during the session, allowing everything to feel effortless and natural once the family arrives.
Styling the Session: Natural, Earthy Tones
For outdoor family photography in Surrey, I always recommend soft, warm, earthy tones and neutral colour palettes. These tones work beautifully with natural light and help keep the focus on connection rather than clothing.
This family chose a stunning palette of creams and greens in different shades, which blended perfectly with the surroundings. It felt timeless, soft, and completely in harmony with the park’s golden tones.
One of my favourite details was the little girl’s dress, which had a delicate layer of tulle over the top. She truly looked like a little fairy in the setting. When the sunset light caught the tulle, it created the most beautiful glow and softness. Those images feel incredibly timeless—moments that won’t just be enjoyed now, but for years to come.
The Session: Play, Connection, and Real Family Moments
To start the shoot, I laid out a picnic blanket so we could begin with relaxed, grounded family portraits. From there, the session naturally unfolded through a mix of guided moments and playful interaction.
We captured:

Big hugs and natural cuddles between parents and children
Mum with each child individually in soft, intimate moments
The children together, full of laughter and connection
Dad with each child in a playful, energetic way
Dads are often brilliant at bringing out the fun side—this session was no exception. There was spinning, lifting, and lots of joyful, carefree play that the children absolutely loved.
In contrast, the moments with mum were calmer and more affectionate—quiet cuddles, gentle connection, and those tender in-between pauses that show deep love.
One of the special parts of this session was also capturing mum and dad together. It’s so rare for parents to be in front of the camera just as a couple, but those images are often some of the most meaningful.
We also created some wonderfully playful moments where we turning the picnic blanket into a makeshift swing which brought so much laughter and joy—it was one of the highlights of the evening.
Sunset Magic and the Final Walk
As the sun dipped lower, we finished the session with one of my favourite types of images: the family walking together in a line, swinging the children between them, with the golden sunset behind them.
These are the kinds of moments that feel effortless but look incredibly cinematic—full of movement, warmth, and connection.
