Relaxed Maternity Photoshoot at home in Thames Ditton, Surrey
Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful in-home maternity photoshoot in Thames Ditton, Surrey. It was a relaxed Saturday morning spent with a lovely family as they prepared to welcome a new baby into the world.
One of the things I love most about maternity photography is capturing not just the pregnancy itself, but the excitement, anticipation and connection between family members as they get ready for this new chapter. This session was particularly special because their three-year-old daughter was so excited about becoming a big sister. The family have chosen to keep her identity private online which I fully understand and respect but I did capture beautiful portraits of her as part of their gallery which they really loved.
A Relaxed Maternity Session At Home
Many people think maternity photos need to take place outdoors at sunset, but there is something incredibly special about photographing families in their own homes.
Home is where so many memories are made, and it provides a comfortable and familiar environment where everyone can relax and be themselves. This family's home in Thames Ditton provided the perfect backdrop for a natural and meaningful maternity photography session.
Rather than focusing on stiff poses, I gently guide families while allowing plenty of space for genuine interactions and connection.
Celebrating This Special Stage of Family Life
We started with some portraits of mum on her own, celebrating her pregnancy and capturing the beautiful anticipation of meeting her new baby.
Pregnancy can sometimes feel like a blur of appointments, preparations and to-do lists, which is why I believe it deserves to be documented and remembered. Maternity photography provides an opportunity to pause and celebrate this unique stage of family life before everything changes.
The Excitement Of Becoming A Big Sister
One of my favourite parts of this session was photographing the bond between mum and her daughter.
At three years old, she was full of excitement about her new role as a big sister. We captured lots of natural moments together, including cuddles, giggles and quiet moments connecting with the baby bump.
Including siblings in maternity sessions is always something I encourage. Not only does it help children feel involved, but it also creates meaningful photographs that tell the story of your growing family.
Capturing Connection Between Mum and Dad
We also spent time creating photographs of mum and dad together before their family of three becomes a family of four.
These moments are often overlooked during pregnancy, but they are such an important part of the story. The anticipation, excitement and shared journey towards parenthood deserve to be remembered too.
My approach is always relaxed and natural, focusing on genuine connection rather than overly posed photographs.
Family Photographs Before Baby Arrives
Towards the end of the session, we captured photographs of the whole family together.
These images often become some of the most treasured because they represent the final chapter before welcoming a new baby. In just a few weeks, life will look completely different, making these photographs even more meaningful.
